Web-design Rules Stop & Go

Craig's List has to be one of the worst designed websites out today. It is just a bunch of clutter packed on a page with no direction or guide. It isnt pleasant to the eye nor is it easily accessible to navigate. It's just awful, I dont know what else to say about it.

On the reverse, I found a site titled "Emotions by Mike" which is a freelance web graphic designer and it is a great representation of a good web design. It has a focal point which draws the eye. The background stands out but does not overpower the text or font. It has widgets to easily navigate you from one point to another and is very simple to grasp.

Rules of Design

As a former Art History student that now believes he is an actual artist, the readings were very informative. Some of the rules and concepts that were discussed were actually the same from the course I took so the information was just a revisiting but a good one.

I particularly enjoyed the 10 Web Design Rules because most people that creates something online generally want viewers and etcetera so learning tips and tools that could make you stand out in a good or potentially bad way is very good to know.

I didn't care for the interview so much. The narration and animations couldn't keep me interested in following. I got a lot from what was happening but I wouldn't watch it again for my own edification.

Hypertexting is Hypervexing...

I am not too certain that I fully comprehend exactly what I am expected to do but here is some introductory writing I have completed. There are a few ideas that I used from no Techno-literacy narrative here but I felt it was appropriate for what I am trying to convey.

According to Dictionary.com - art·ist  [ahr-tist] – noun

1. a person who produces works in any of the arts  that are primarily subject to aesthetic criteria.

To take it a step further, I believe an artist is someone that performs an art. In my exploration into this craft, I have made the choice to try some new things that I never gave much thought to that could potentially help further my appreciation for writing. All of the arts work collectively and by having open mind, one becomes open to endless possibilities. I thought of ways to enhance my experiences and decided to take an unconventional approach and the result was a collection of ideas, arguments, letters and poems that seemingly connect through my love for food.

I have always been an advocate for the arts but little did I know about or recognize that there was a starving artist within me. When I thought of the word artist, I instantly imagined a painter, someone who drew very well or a singer but never a writer. An artist is someone who is skilled and gifted in a specific area of art and often it is something out of the reach of the average person or so I thought. After wrestling with my own preconceived notions and sharing them with family and friends, I soon realized that I was not the only person that thought and felt this way.

I always enjoyed writing but it was not until later in my life that I actually began to appreciate and understand exactly why. I have always maintained the ideal that other than cooking, writing is the most intimate way for someone to highlight his or her creativity and style through personal expression. Writing, just as cooking, is complex in its development; it goes through stages before it is complete. Writing, for many is the catalyst of their personal freedom and liberties. I particularly find writing very therapeutic and satisfying because it follows the lead of the writer and takes on any form or idea in which they choose; it allows you to go the distance where nothing else can take you.

The idea of writing a book came to me in the form of a dream, which, when I think of in hindsight, retrospectively was the outlet for some pinned up frustrations I had due to my second semester of college English. Even now, I am amazed at how that course had completely thrown me off and disrupted my confidence in my ability. If nothing else, I learned that it takes strength and endurance to be an effective college student.

My first semester of English was the most inspiring class I have ever had and it was not so much of the class as it was my professor and the positive aura that she projected. She was phenomenal, rich in encouragement and energy, which she generously extended to the class. It was a writing course and we wrote about everything in this class; it was very therapeutic.

In my second semester, it was the complete opposite in that we read and did not write at all. I had just gotten used to the idea that I could possibly be a good writer and to have it all flipped upside down was not very reassuring or enjoyable, at least not at that point of reference in my mind. People so often get comfortable with things and/or situations that if anything comes along and threatens their security, it usually is not well received or embraced. That was no exception for me.

In my dream, I did not recall the preceding events but I remember awakening with a constant thought in my mind and I knew instantly that GOD was speaking to me. What I remembered was a very good feeling, a sense of euphoria. I felt He was reassuring me and telling me that it was okay that reading was all I did in this semester of English because I would need to read more to write more. The more I thought on that idea, the more excited I became because I felt it was a true statement and I knew if anyone had the audacity to believe it, surely, I was that person.

This is my conscious attempt to recap my recipe of enrichment and allow the readers into my mind, to explore my concepts and ideas about my interaction with the arts from the perspective of a student, a writer, a critic and ultimately an artist.

Is Digital Rhetoric the New Rhetoric?

Digital rhetoric is rhetoric more specifically designed for a new age or should I say the new internet savvy individual. A prime example of this was the very assignment we had to complete. One aspect was to conduct a reading as the other aspect was to watch a video. Of course, the video was easier to follow as it did not require effort from the viewer but the reading demands careful attention to be paid and was more of a task than watching the video. In this case, the video made its point much quicker than the reading allowed.

With this stated, I am old fashioned and believe some things require attention and observation that a digitalized version just cannot replicate. Digital rhetoric is the inclusion of “digital” mediums (Facebook, Twitter, Kindles, Blogs, Vlogs, Videos, Texting, Phones and etcetera.) with the original founding components.

Wesch made a good point in suggesting that we should revisit core aspects and first improve upon them before we dive and delve into something awesomely new.

Rhetoric for Creative Commons

I chose to go with (Logos or the appeal to reason) in relation to the Creative Common articles we have read for class.

Though there are some that fight hard against sharing and allowing others to revise or revamp their work in any capacity. I chose logos because I feel that the Creative Common Laws appeal to reason in a way that makes it almost impossible for an individual to disagree or object.

I think this is the case because in appealing to logic or reason, there are several different variations or specifications that could possibly meet any needs of the individual that created whatever it is that may be revised or enhanced.

Wikipedia Cert Experience

I made it through the tutorial! Praise the SAVIOR! I made it!
It wasnt too bad at all, just a lot of information for me to digest all at once, as discussed in prior classes, Im a little older so my mind cant retain too much at one time so...
It really wasnt bad though, it was clear and easy to navigate through.

My problem is a topic. I have absolutely no idea of anything to write about, none whatsoever. I'm lost. I don't even know where to begin to look. Naturally food was the first thing to come to mind but what would I write about? I'm just glad I made it through the tutorial!

Wiki ikki..

I have used Wikipedia throughout my knowledge of the site. It is something that I use personally as well as academically and I will continue to do so.

As a student, knowing and relying on credible sources is a major conponent to your academic life and so, though I love Wikipedia, I am not afraid to outsource.

I think a lot of people, especially professors get carried away with the restrictive use they place on students in regards to Wikipedia. As long as it fits in the context of what it is being used for, I see nothing wrong with its use academically.

Creative Commons

I think the Creative Commons licenses are a great idea for certain works of individuals that do not mind people taking, altering or even advancing their original work as long as the credit and acclaim goes to the original creator. It can become very tricky with certain works but it is all relative.

I do not think any of this applies directly to me because I do not really have works, other than pictures and writings. I think writings may need different copyright laws and regulation because altering writings alters the work.

Media Literacy

This read was okay but most of the information seemed to me as common knowledge. What I mean to say is that anyone that has any understanding of the concept of media could make sense of the very term "media literacy". I will say some terms or references that were mentioned in the article were new to me but I believe that if I thought hard enough or even cared enough, it wouldn't have been something unknown but moreso something unrecognized.

For instance, when the headlines are highlighted: The human brain processes images differently than words, We process time-based media differently than static media, Media are most powerful when they operate on an emotional level, Media messages can be manipulated to enhance emotional impact. , Media effects are subtle and etcetera, it is valuable information but nothing far from the everyday user of media if they really gave it any thought.

It was an okay article but I just felt it was common knowledge, nothing to celebrate.

Web-dentity

The readings for this assignment were enjoyable. Not so much because I fully enjoy academic reading but because they lent themselves to a subject or an idea that is relative to me as a student and as a student taking a course on cyber writing. Jenkins was very clear in presenting his ideals on participatory culture and why it is not 2.0 which made the reading easy to follow.

I do believe that there are certain expectations when you speak of one’s identity, whether real-life or online. In reference to the web, individuals can become people, images or characters that they are not necessarily in real life because they have the “protection” of the computer to mask or hide their true identities. With this stated, I feel that when I write online, I have to keep in mind the audience to whom this is presented and the perception that I would want people to conclude about me so I would never reveal my entire self because it could yield positive or negative results and I do not want to base my online existence on a misperception or misunderstanding. In real life, I have no other choice but to be whom and what I really am as this is my norm and I am and will be known as such.

Online communities are tricky because in one aspect, you may want to be a part of one because either it interests you or to be a source of viable information for the other participants. On the other hand, you may not want to join because of all the free radical and erroneous comments, statements or behaviors of others and you will not fully know if any group has any of those issues until you become a part. With this in mind, I do not join groups or communities often and when I do, it has to have relevance for me or mean something for someone that may want me to be active with it.

For instance, on Facebook, I have been randomly added to groups that I have no connection to or even understand their purposes. Before I exit, I try to see what they are about and in most cases, it is foolishness or something near and dear to someone else which is not conveyed or reciprocated by me. I hate to be added to groups without my knowledge because I do not wish to be seen as exclusively apprehensive if I decline the request or dismiss myself.

The ones that I have joined were solely a benefit for me. For example, I am an English major and my ex-professor who is now one of my closest friends composed a writing group and I was very humbled and excited about even being considered to take part as I am an undergraduate and these members are ones with Master’s and Doctorate degrees. This could only be a benefit for me so I happily obliged the request to join but not all groups or communities are as pertinent.

The articles did not really affect my perspective but they did bring clarity to some unnamed feelings or thoughts that I had about the web and the overall people perspective issues surrounding this culture.

Friending the Web

It’s funny that the article or subject of “friends” and friendships is being discussed here as I recently wrote on my Facebook account regarding something similar. I spoke of how a person is either my friend or they are not, I do not have any in-between. I mocked how I do not see myself as important to differentiate between friends and acquaintances. You are either my friend or you are not. This is not meant in a negative way but simply to say that I do not think so much of myself.

In terms of social media, such as MySpace & Facebook, friends are anyone that you accept as one, including people you may not know. With Twitter, there are no friends just people you follow and those that follow you. In reference to the aforementioned sites, everyone you connect with are your “friends”.

The argument presented in the article highlights the understanding and clarification of the term friend. Boyd argues, “…Friendship helps people write community into being in social network sites”. She further explains, “By examining what different participants groups do on social network sites, this paper investigates what Friendship means and how Friendship affects the culture of the sites.” Although I can see her reasoning, I do not understand the logic as to why it matters to her whether the people “friending” one another are really friends or not. It comes down to a person’s perception and perspective of the particular person and why they became friends on the sites.

I personally have several friends on Facebook that I do not know or should say did not know but have made leads into knowing on a friendship level. There was a time when I had over 800 friends and never spoke to about 700 of them so respectively, they really were not friends but there was no other way to connect to them at the time. Currently, Facebook goes through the occasional maintenance and upgrades and have improved the way “friends” are added and filtered through your lists.

It seems as Boyd suspects that there may be ulterior motives for people friending individuals that they do not know. This conclusion is drawn when she states, “While some participants believe that people should only indicate meaningful relationships, it is primarily non-participants who perpetuate the expectation that Friending is the same as listing one’s closest buddies.” While I do believe this as partially true, I do not believe this is the case with everyone. For me specifically, I have accepted friend request from people I did not know because we have mutual friends. It is kind of a contradiction because I hate the fact that people who may have seen me somewhere or we have friends in common think that they know me or we are friends. My issue with that is simply, we do not know each other and I do not want to be attached to someone I am unfamiliar with. With social media sites, I can partially “research” the individual on the site before I make a decision to accept them or not.

I do not think the term friend or friendships as related to social media should be concluded to have the same context as the actual meaning because in reality, people that I am friends with on Facebook or the likes I would never be friends with. In summation, it is all for entertainment purposes.

Web Readers

Nielsen’s description or explanation of the way individuals read or scan the web is very relatable to me because I prefer to actually hold literature and feel the turning of pages. It is not a must but if it is not in my hands, I do not give it much effort or attention as it does not seem important.

When asked to take notes from the web, I do not print out the article but I do handwrite my notes in a pad. Reading and writing on or from the web does not seem as personal and requires an extra effort to create the desired results for me. It is a very weird thing that I cannot aptly explain it this all makes any sense.

I read the webpage as required but it is not my preferred method of reading. I do not recall ever highlighting anything on a webpage as I read because I really do not give internet reading the time to find something worth highlighting.

Online reading has affected my print reading per say but it has made me appreciate a sturdy book. There is just something about paper. I understand that online literature is more economical as related to the saving of trees and etcetera but books are timeless. Though they are perishable, a book defies time and if preserved, can last many lifetimes and civilizations over. The internet age is just the need fad but I am sure there will be something to replace eBooks and the sorts soon.
